Topical authority

Algorithmic recognition that a domain is expert in a specific topic. Built through deep coverage, coherent internal linking and consistent external signals.

Also known as: topical expertise, subject authority

Topical authority is not a public-number metric like DR or DA. It is the set of signals Google uses to decide “this domain knows this topic”. Built through deep topical coverage, demonstrable authorship, coherent internal linking and external validation (other relevant topic sites cite you). How that coverage is built in practice is in how to create evergreen content that drives traffic.

How it is built

  1. Define the central topic of the project and its sub-topics. No clear definition, no strategy.
  2. Cover sub-topics with proprietary content structured in clusters (pillar + satellites).
  3. Editorial consistency: authors with declared expertise in bio, regular publishing, depth above sector average.
  4. Internal linking with topical logic: all topic satellites link to topic pillars and to each other.
  5. External signals: mentions and links from sites also recognised as topic authorities.

Why it outweighs generic DR

A DR 70 from a generalist outlet is worth less than a DR 40 from a specialist site of the topic when competing on a query from that topic. Google has evolved in that direction: recent core updates clearly reward specialists over generalists in their niches.

At SEOCOM we build topical authority systematically: we do not publish to fill a calendar, we publish to close specific gaps on the project’s topical map.
